" A thumb goes up,
A BOAT goes by
It's nearly 1 AM and here am I
Hitchin' a ride, hitchin' a ride
Gotta get me home
By the mornin' light..."
We don't get many but there have been a few memorable ones.
Like this beautiful dragonfly who clung to my mosquito net for a few kilometres.
Or the small dark shy butterfly who wouldn't let me get near enough to make a good photo. He stayed on the curtain for a day or so.
Plenty of spiders come along for the ride and we encourage them as they keep away the mosquitoes!
We have also had a couple of birds who flew in, hopped around a bit and then flew out again. Little ones like sparrows and once we even had a river swallow who hitchhiked on the deck for a micro-second!
Big birds like swans or herons or cormorants never hitchhike on Sulina but ducks have been known to rest or sleep on Sulina's bathing platform.
This one was hatching her eggs on the boat next to Sulina!
And of course, gulls are the champion hitchhikers, not on our boat though. They find their own transport and drift along down the Danube with the greatest of ease.
This year there have been no human hitchhikers at all. Anybody want a ride? You don't even have to put your thumb up!
