Father Rhein

OR..... rather more than we had expected!

The Germans call this mighty river 'Vater Rhein' and with nervous excitement and some trepidation, we set out, this time WITH the current, upon a 200 kilometre stretch northward, which would bring us after a few days to the river Main at Mainz. There we'd finally begin travelling east, getting ever closer to the Danube.

After the familiar routine of two big locks, all seemed to be going very well with the boat and we stopped for a lunch break at Iffesheim.

Shortly after we resumed the trip however, the motor temperature became too hot and the cooling water was not cooling the inner system which began to boil over. No water was gushing out the back. We cut the engine and began drifting in this very fast flowing section of the Rhein.

We crossed the path of a ferry, waving our red flag to indicate inability to manoeuvre. Eventually the engine cooled to a temperature low enough to allow us to start the motor again, everything seemingly normal once more.

We continued on to Karlsruhe.
